There are as many different types of websites as there are types of businesses in the world. But websites are designed and created by adding certain features that are desired and/or required by the website owner. Below is an outline of what they are with a little description of what each one is.
Home Page/Landing Page - This is the simplest of all websites. It is one page that has it's own web address (ex: www.yourcompanyname.com) and when the webpage opens, your particular page displays. A home page is the smallest of all websites, but it is enough for someone who just needs the barest of contact information (web address, email address, basic information as to who you are and/or what you do). If you want calls or emails, this website would be enough for you.
5 Page Website - This is a standard website that has a home page with four links to other pages. For example, a home page, and a Mission Statement/Who We Are page, a Product or Services Page, a Contact Us page and maybe one other page that would be unique to your business or product. This website would be good for an artist, tradesperson, medical or legal professional who is presenting information about themselves, but is not selling anything online or giving any type of detailed pricing.
Flash Video Sites - Flash videos are the latest and the snazziest in the world of website design. However, flash website do not do well with search engine optimatization (coming up on google in the top 10 pages) because the search engines cannot absorb or read flash videos.
Flash videos can take some time to load, sometimes from 5 to 10 seconds. Unfortunately, that short amount of time is too long and many people will not wait for a website to "download" or "upload" that long. Too often, the "flash" of flash video is never seen.
However, there is a time and place for all things, so if you want a flashy website that is an adjunct to your already-thriving business, this would be the website for you. You already have your clientelle/customers and want to have an impressive, fancy website.
Photo Galleries - Some websites need or require photo galleries or lots of photographs throughout their sites. An example of people who would require them would be artists, illustrators, designers, or photographers. A photo gallery can be created from your photos delivered by email or they can be scanned up for a photo gallery as well.
Another business that would profit from photo galleries are real estate sales people. People who are looking for houses like photos. They really prefer walk-through videos, which are now becoming the norm. With the popularity of Craigs List, you can have your own walk-through video shot and load it up to Craigs List and wait for the calls.
Web-Ad Website - This is a website that is set up as part of a marketing campaign. Flyers, coupons and ads are coordinated with the website to support each other. They are also coordinated to work with ebay, Craigs List, Facebook, Twitter, print ads and websites. They all link together so that your web presence is everywhere and the circle is never broken. This is described further in the Website Specials.
Ecommerce Site - If you need a website with a shopping cart, this is the most complicated of the websites out there. In order to set up a shopping cart, you will need to pass a credit application. If you are having credit problems, or you want to start small, you can still offer to sell items using paypal, which is the most popular online shopping site. It only takes minutes to set up your account.
Overview flash videos - If you would like to have an overview flash video, sort of like your own 1 to 2 minute commercial, of what you do, this can be done with graphics and text. You can see an example here.
As mentioned above, flash videos can also be done for real estate sales, car sales, and any other large ticket item that you would like to sell. It is very competitive out there and a short video can really help you jump to the head of the class.
